10 Best First-Person Shooters On The PS5, Ranked

The best first-person shooter games on the PS5 stand out in some way, whether it’s how they work or how well they work online.

Even though there were some great first-person shooter games for platforms in the ’90s, the genre didn’t really take off outside of PC gaming until controllers with two analogue sticks became the norm. Franchises like Call of Duty and Medal of Honour helped lead the way, and Call of Duty is still one of the biggest games in the genre.

The FPS genre is one of the most famous in the modern world because of series like these and many others like them. Because of this, the PS5 has a lot of great first-person shooters. However, the best PS5 FPS games find ways to stand out, either through their unique gameplay or their unbeatable online support.

Far Cry 6

DeveloperUbisoft Toronto
PublisherUbisoft
Release DateOctober 7, 2021
Metacritic Rating73

When most people think of Far Cry, they think of it along with all the other popular open-world titles from the turn of the century. At its heart, though, the Far Cry series is just as much a first-person shooter as it is an open-world game, and Far Cry 6 will be the same.

Even though it doesn’t have as much shine as some of its peers, it’s still a great game with a good story and another great video game villain, which is something the series has always been good at. Fans of Far Cry’s many great bad guys can even play as some of them in the game’s three DLC episodes.

Metal: Hellsinger

DeveloperThe Outsiders
PublisherFuncom
Release DateSeptember 15, 2022
Metacritic Rating78

Metal: Hellsinger is a bit like a mix between Doom and Guitar Hero. Players are told to get lost in the fast-paced riffs of strong metal music while fighting an endless army of demons from hell. In that way, it sounds a lot more like Doom than the other one, but rhythm plays a much bigger role than one might think.

Aside from being a great game to play, it also has a great music with songs by some of the biggest names in metal. Among them are System of a Down’s Serg Tankian, Trivium’s Matt Heafy, and a few members of the Swedish death metal band Dark Tranquilly. It’s not perfect, but it’s a nice change from the normal books in the same genre.

Deep Rock Galactic

DeveloperGhost Ship Games
PublisherCoffee Stain Publishing
Release DateJanuary 4, 2022
Metacritic Rating85

Deep Rock Galactic is a cooperative sci-fi shooter where players take control of a badass space dwarf and try to mine valuable resources while fighting waves of scary enemies. For many people, that alone will make the game’s price, which is about half of what you would expect to pay for a game of this quality, more than fair.

Every part of the game is just right, from the combat, which is hard but fun, to the way it looks, which is highly stylized. The co-op experience is probably the biggest selling point, since few games can be as much fun as this one. It’s one of the best and most interesting first-person shooter games on the PS5.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

DeveloperInfinity Ward
PublisherActivision
Release DateOctober 28, 2022
Metacritic Rating76

Even though Call of Duty isn’t as big as it used to be, many people still play it when they want to play an FPS game. To be fair, both the latest mainline game in the series and the latest Warzone game are still a lot of fun to play with other people. However, the Warzone game lasts a little longer than the yearly mainline games.

But Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has something extra to offer: a great single-player story that fans of first-person shooter games will love. Considering this, and the fact that Dice messed up with Battlefield 2042, Modern Warfare 2 is probably one of the best first-person shooter games for the PS5.

Borderlands 3

DeveloperGearbox Software
Publisher2K
Release DateNovember 12, 2020
Metacritic Rating91

Borderlands 3 is another game that fails to live up to the high standards set by its predecessors. It has some cringe-worthy writing, and some of the dialogue is so bad that players may want to turn it off. But the rest of the game makes up for this and reminds players why so many people think Borderlands is the best looter shooter.

The PS5 version of Borderlands 3 came out 14 months after the PS4 version. It has changes all around, but the biggest ones are better graphics, higher frame rates, and faster loading times. The next-gen versions of the game also let up to four people play together locally, which is twice as many as the PS4 and Xbox One versions.

Apex Legends

DeveloperRespawn Entertainment
PublisherElectronic Arts
Release DateMarch 29, 2022
Metacritic Rating89

Apex Legends has changed a lot since it first came out in early 2019. A lot of new features and general changes have helped make it one of the most popular video games of all time. As of February 2022, more than 130 million people had tried the free-to-play game. This put it somewhere between League of Legends and Grand Theft Auto 5 on the list of games with the most players.

Apex Legends is a battle royale game, like many other free-to-play first-person shooter games. Loot boxes and microtransactions help pay for the cost of making the game. But unlike many of its competitors, the game focuses more on reality and tight gunplay, which has helped it find a place in a market that is still very competitive.

Metro Exodus: Complete Edition

Developer4A Games
PublisherDeep Silver
Release DateJune 18, 2021
Metacritic Rating83

Metro Exodus is a first-person shooter that came out early in 2019. It has survival and stealth features. Even though it’s the third game in a trio, players don’t really need to have played the first two to enjoy its great gameplay or understand its great story. Metro Exodus is a single-player game, just like its predecessors. This is a nice change of pace, since there are so many multiplayer FPS games.

As you might think, the full version of Metro Exodus has a lot of improvements over the basic version. All of these changes can make a big difference in how the game is played. The frame rate has been changed for the better, and Slope Game now runs at a buttery smooth 60 FPS. Even though the game can be bought in stores, Metro Exodus: Complete version can’t be bought from the PlayStation store. Instead, players have to buy the game’s gold version and then download a free upgrade.

Destiny 2

DeveloperBungie
PublisherBungie
Release DateDecember 8, 2020
Metacritic Rating85

Sony wants to move into the live service market over the next few years, so it makes a lot of sense for the Japanese giant to buy Bungie in the middle of 2022. The success of Destiny 2 shows that, unlike many of its competitors, the company that made Halo knows exactly what it takes to make the “Games as a Service” concept work.

Even though the free-to-play game came out in 2017, there are still a lot of people who play it. Of course, a big reason for this is not only Bungie’s great help after the games came out, but also the games’ great core gameplay. Destiny 2 is easily one of the best first-person shooters on the PS5, and with at least one more big update still to come before the end of the Light and Darkness Saga, that’s not likely to change any time soon.

Deathloop

DeveloperArkane Lyon
PublisherBethesda Softworks
Release DateSeptember 14, 2021
Metacritic Rating88

Deathloop can be played online with other people, but not in the way most players would expect. Instead of high-stakes team death matches or chaotic battle royale action, players will only have to worry about a single opponent or a single goal if they join another player’s session. In that way, it’s a bit like the PvP multiplayer in many FromSoftware games, but it’s much better made.

Even though Julianna and Colt’s fight that never ends works very well, it’s not the only thing that makes Deathloop such a great game. Its story makes you think, and its fights are both easy to understand and fun to do. It feels like an obvious progression from some of Arcane’s other games, especially the Dishonoured series.

Doom Eternal

Developerid Software
PublisherBethesda Softworks
Release DateMarch 20, 2020
Metacritic Rating87

On the PS5, there are a lot of great first-person games, but there is only one Doom Eternal. The game builds on the great foundations that its 2016 predecessor set up. It hits all the right notes, and the brutal and bloody fighting makes hell feel a lot friendlier than it should.

The grappling hook is one of the most important new features in Doom Eternal. It makes moving around the map very easy. But unlike a lot of other games, the grapple mechanic can also be used in battle, which lets players chain attacks together in a way that no other game can. Given how important Doom and id Software are to the FPS genre, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Doom Eternal is one of the best FPS games on the PS5, but the sheer beauty of what’s on offer here might.
