Essentially, an official may be a government employee. they’re appointed by the government to any government officials or post in reference to the affairs of the Central Government.

Unlike regular undergraduate courses, government officials may be a life time career choice. An official -on different posts- basically implements the laws and policies that are made by elected leaders, thus, playing a serious role within the progress and development of the state.

Entrance exam and different branches

The entry into the State Civil Services is through a competitive examination conducted by the respective State Public Service Commission.

• The Indian Information Service

The first three within the above list are ‘all India’ services whereas those which follow are central services. Aside from these services which are under the control of the central government, the states even have their own administrative, forest and police services. The doorway examinations to the latter are conducted by the individual states in question.

Career Prospects

The career prospects in civil services are many.  In Central Services, the primary posting is typically as a Diplomatic attaché/ Undersecretary/ Probationary IPS officer, counting on the branch chosen. In state civil services, it’s mentioned as Deputy Collector/Deputy Superintendent of Police/ Taxes Commissioner etc.

Pros:

Cons:

1. Low salary ( An 20 year experience person gets less then what an 10 years experienced corporate top management person earns)

3. Less usage of an IAS officer’s ideas and opinions for the higher living of the public (this is one among the worst considering the extent of preparation given by the officer).
