Tension Headache
Nothing seems to help against the pain in your head and you’re at the end of your rope? Then it might be time to look at things from a new perspective. In an interview with Prevention magazine, renowned physical therapist David Reavy sheds some light on a very common cause of tension headaches. With this type of pain, the pain can range from dull to moderate and can occur very often or only occasionally. It is often described as a pain that spreads around the head and reaches both sides of the head. Sometimes a tension headache causes eye pain.
Chewing muscle
Stress, anxiety, lack of sleep and dehydration can be the causes of tension headaches. The chewing muscle, or masseter muscle, can also play a role in this type of headache. This is the strongest muscle in the body and can cause a headache when it is over-tensed. The masseter muscle is found in the face, around the cheek and jaw, and is responsible for moving the jaw. A tense or overworked masseter muscle can cause discomfort in the neck, shoulders, and head. Headaches caused by this muscle can be relieved with a simple massage technique.
Massage technique
According to Reavy, this technique can make your headache go away in just a couple of seconds. First, place the groove just below your cheekbone and over your jaw with your fingers. Using one or two fingers should work. Let your fingers rest on the fleshy part of the masseter muscle. This is the area you will be massaging. Massage the area with your fingers or knuckles inward and downward. Apply gentle pressure and open and close your mouth while doing this. After a few seconds, your masseter muscle will feel more relaxed and your headache will decrease.
Physiotherapist
It is smart to apply this massage technique already when you can feel the headache tension coming on. The physical therapist also says that some people tend to clench their jaws when they feel stressed. For those people, it is especially important to apply this technique regularly. People who grind their teeth in their sleep may also benefit from this method, as it will relieve the pain.
