What is a plug valve and what does it do

The smooth and efficient operation of hydraulic systems is dependent on plug valves for any sector using hydraulic systems. Plug valves are quarter-turn manual motion valves available in cylindrical or conical shapes that use to control fluid flow. They provide on-off, diverting, as well as basic moderate throttling services.

Here’s an overview of plug valves, including their types and applications.

The Plug Valve: How Does It Work?

Plug valves consist of a plug with a hollow passage in the body of the valve. When the quarter-turn motion is performed, the pipe and the hole are aligned, leading to an open state. At a 90-degree angle from the open position, the valve sits across the pipe leading to a closed state.

Plug valves are available in many different styles with various port openings.

• Two-Way Plug Valves: The design allows for a closure element in the middle (a plug and a sleeve), along with a straight-through, two-way service to open and close the device.

• Three-Way Plug Valves: There is usually a third port on these valves, which is an angle away from the inlet. Plug valves can use for diverting flow (entry from the inlet channeled towards one or both outlets) or combining flow (entry from two inlets combined into one outlet).

What is a Plug Valve Use for?

Plug valves are excellent solutions for many commercial and light industrial applications, including directing the fluid flow, handling gas or liquid fuels, regulating fluids with suspended solids such as slurries, or handling low-pressure, low-temperature services. Plug valves find application across a variety of sectors and systems due to their smooth design, inline maintenance capabilities, leak-tight service, minimal resistance to flow, and multi-port design options.

What types of plug valves are there?

• Lubricated Plug Valves

The cast iron lubricated plug valves are ideal for dirty upstream applications because they can handle abrasive or corrosive materials without getting clogged. To maintain optimum effectiveness, the plugs need to be resealed frequently.

• Non-Lubricated Plug Valves

There are a variety of non-lubricated plug valves available, including elastomer sleeve, lift-type, and fully lined plug valves.

• Expandable Plug Valves

Multi-component valves have a complex rotation motion that reduces the wear and abrasion of the seals. In applications that don’t require double isolation, they are a good choice for preventing product contamination.

• Eccentric Plug Valves

Exccentric plug valves are often use in isolation or flow control systems where they need a high seating force and minimal friction from open to closed positions. Sewage, sludge and slurries, air, and other services is include.

Advantages and Disadvantages

In addition to being compact and taking up less space, plug valves offer the following advantages:

Flow Regulation – The shut-off is tight, the opening is quick, and pressure drops are low.

Fire-safety and Durability –  Corrosion or erosion is less likely since the plug and body seating surface are not expose to the line fluid.

Versatility – Plug valves with large flow rates can also use.

Plug valves have the following disadvantages:

Throttling applications are not compatible with them.

Their friction is too high to allow them to be actuated easily.

They are prone to galling.

The design of tapered plugs reduces port size.
