Sky burial in Tibet is a traditional funeral method of the Tibetans. After death, the body is taken to a designated place for vultures (or other birds, animals, etc.) to devour. It is essentially a socio-cultural phenomenon, a belief, a way of expressing mourning for the dead. The core of sky burial is the immortality of the soul and the cycle of reincarnation. Death is just the separation of the immortal soul from the old body, which is a different transformation of different times. Tibetans admire the burial of the sky, thinking that feeding the vulture with a “skin” is the noblest giving, which reflects the highest state of Mahayana Buddhist Prajna Paramita-giving self.
