According to Technographx, the Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600 series is giving a solid standing to the company in this processor manufacturing business.

The naming system of Qualcomm for Snapdragon 600 series chips is quite complex. So, it could be difficult for you to keep track of the position of the processor in this series. For instance, the Snapdragon 632, a recently launched processor isn’t really better than Snapdragon 630 that was released in May 2017.

We think that these naming screw-ups are intentional and this is done to keep the general public guessing. Today, in this post, we will have a look at the mid-range processors of Snapdragon. In the Snapdragon’s 600 series, there are a total of five chips. The names of these chips are Snapdragon 660, Snapdragon 636, Snapdragon 632, Snapdragon 630, and Snapdragon 625.

The processors of these series can be further divided into two sections: the lower and upper mid-range. The upper mid-range category consists of Snapdragon 660 and 636. The rest of the processors fall in the Lower mid-range.

One of the most powerful chips in the series is the SD 660 and SD 636. The first chip to use the custom Kryo cores was the SD 660 in 2017 and very soon SD 636 joined it. SD 632 also has the custom cores but it doesn’t fall in this category.

If we think from the perspective of the naming convention then it is evident that the SD 636 is much closer to SD630 and SD632. But it is not true. SD 636 is very much closer to SD 660. After learning this, we can say that the naming conventions of the chips aren’t pretty straightforward.

Both SD 636 and SD 660 are having very similar specifications of CPU. They both are having the same custom Kryo 260 cores in a 4+4 cluster.

Talking about Snapdragon 660 vs 636, the possible differences between both are their clocked frequencies. The clocked frequency for SD636 is 1.8GHz and 2.2GHz for SD660. The other major dissimilarities between the two chips are as follows:

2. Quad-HD(QHD) vs Full-HD(FHD)+ (18:9) Display Support | 4K vs 1080p External Support
3. LPDDR4 @ 1866MHz vs LPDDR4 @ 1333MHz RAM Support

Adreno 512 is the GPU of SD 660 which is more powerful than SD 636’s Adreno 509.

Adreno 509 has slightly better performance than 510 though it is placed below Adreno 510. Adreno 512 stands above all having the clock speed of 800MHz.

The other major difference that we can find between both is the support for RAM speed that is LPDDR4 @ 1866MHz vs LPDDR4 @ 1333MHz. Both the chips are capable of supporting the RAM up to 8GB and UFS storage as well as eMMC. The display support of both chips is also different. SD 660 has QHD and SD 636 has FHD+.

Both the processors are having more or less the same technical features apart from the major differences mentioned above. Both chips use the same Kryo 260 cores. Both the chips have Hexagon 680 DSP, 4K @ 30fps video recording and Qualcomm’s Spectra 160 ISP with ClearSight technology. From the points noted above, we can say that SD660 is slightly better than SD636.

Now, let’s talk about the other processors. Snapdragon 630 is ahead of SD 632 and the chief reason for this is the performance. SD 630 is much closer to SD 636 and not SD 632. But, SD 630 is having some disadvantages when it is put against SD 636.

There are custom cores also available in SD 630 but when compared to Snapdragon 636 & 660, it fails to beat them. The reason behind this is that SD630 is featuring eight Cortex A53 cores having 4 cores of 2.2GHz and remaining 4 of 1.8GHz which are less powerful compared to the Kryo 260 cores.
