Maintenance of package integrity (MPI) testing must be performed to ascertain whether or not a surgical tray is still sterile after a certain amount of time. While double wrapping trays helps keep trays sterile, it is not a foolproof method, especially given certain environmental aspects where the tray is stored.

The market for nonwoven material for sterilization wraps is projected to reach tens of billions due to the high demand for better sterilization options. However, fierce competition currently over saturates the industry, with multiple companies vying for the most protective material against bacteria. Hospitals are the biggest proprietors of new sterilization products but clinics and private practices are gaining headway in the markets as well.

The biggest points of improvement for the design of these wraps are the sterility of the material, how many times a surgical instrument tray needs to be wrapped in the material, and materials that do not cause skin sensitivity.
