In this process, a thin thread or dental floss (specialised thread) is used to remove the food particles, bacteria, fibres and plaque that usually form between two teeth. It is a daily practice done when your toothbrush is not able to remove such fibre, as it can stay overnight in your mouth, which can cause bad breath and attract bacteria, causing cavities.       

Though it is not necessary for everyone, as some people have a tooth structure that does not allow food particles to get stuck in their teeth, while others have a common problem of food particles and fibres stuck in their teeth. So, it is necessary to floss your teeth properly on a regular basis.

Most importantly, flossing is very much necessary to remove the food particles that stay for a long time in your teeth. When food particles or fibre of fruits or vegetables stay for a longer period in your teeth, they will start rotting and attract the harmful bacteria, causing cavities. Prevents Gum Diseases: Flossing removes the food particles and fibre content from your teeth that can cause gum disease. As the food particles or fibre items get stuck between the teeth under the gum line, they can cause various diseases if they stay for longer periods.

Prevents Tarter and Plaque: Flossing also helps to remove the plaque deposited on the teeth that becomes harder and transforms into tartar, which can be removed only through dental procedures.  

Minimise the Risk of Cavities: The food particles that stay overly stuck between your teeth attract the bacteria that eat such food and sugar in your mouth. 

Prevents Bad Breath: The food particles and bacteria stuck between your teeth decay for longer hours, which can cause a bad smell that will make your breath smell bad, not good for anyone.     

Protects Tooth Enamel: Most importantly, when bacteria eat such food particles, they release certain type of acid that causes the cavity and erodes the outer layer of teeth known as tooth enamel.

Best Flossing Technique

You can floss your teeth anytime at your ease or whenever any food particles are stuck in your teeth. However, if you don’t have time, you can do it the night before going to sleep. It will save your time of doing it again and again, it is more important to remove the food particles and brush your teeth in the morning before going to sleep to prevent your teeth from cavities and tooth decay. 

Stepwise Flossing Method:

Step 1: First, you need to prepare yourself for flossing, choose a right time and place to floss. At the night in front of a mirror in your bathroom. 

Step 2: Now take an 18 to 24-inch floss thread and wrap it around your middle fingers from both ends, leaving 2 to 3 inches in the middle to insert it between the teeth.

Step 2: Now hold the floss thread tightlybetween your thumbs and index fingers. Now, you can use your index finger for lower teeth and thumbs for upper teeth to maintain a balance and control.  

Step 3: Now insert the flossing thread between your teeth and slide your hand gently from one side to another side in a “sawing” motion.

Step 4: Form a C-Shapeto curve around the one tooth, and once it reaches the gumline, gently slide the thread between the gums and tooth. Make sure to avoid snapping the floss into your gums, as it can cause bleeding.

Step 5: Keep repeating the sliding activity and rub the floss gently up and down to clean the teeth and remove the food particles or any fibre stuck there.  

Step 6: Now use the thread to curve the floss in the opposite direction to clean the nearby tooth, and keep repeating the up-and-down motion to ensure that the teeth.  

Step 7: You can move to other teeth having such food particles stuck, or you can repeat this for every tooth, including the back side of the last molars, to remove the plaque from your teeth.

Things to Consider While Flossing Teeth

Fast Snapping: Snapping the floss at high speed can cause bleeding or damage delicate gum tissue.

In all directions: Floss with C-shape floss and move side by side and up and down to floss properly.

Rinse your Mouth: After flossing, rinse your mouth with fresh water to get your teeth cleaned. 

Reusing the Flosser: Avoid using the same flosser many times, as it can spread the mouth bacteria.

Use Dental Flossers: Either use the thread that is not sharp enough to cut your gumline, you can use the professional flossers made for this purpose or use the flosser sticks.

Teeth flossing is not only the best way to remove the food particles and fibre stuck in your teeth. It not only removes such food particles that attract bacteria, causing cavities, but also prevents your teeth from decay. Just take the flosser with the snapping technique and make sure to move the flosser in all directions.

Keep repeating this process for a few seconds or on other teeth where you feel something is stuck. However, you can occasionally use the flossing on all your teeth to remove the plaque and other unwanted particles to prevent your teeth from cavities and keep your teeth healthy and strong.
