Watches and their nicknames
For Rolex beginners, the nicknames can lead to confusion, but enthusiasts will immediately know which watch is hidden behind the nicknames such as “Hulk” or “Pepsi”. Buy Rolex watches Online get their nicknames for a variety of reasons and often take time. Some of these pet names are due to the color of the watch. “Coke” and “Pepsi” are Rolex GMT Master models whose rim colors match those of well-known companies: the rim of the “Pepsi” is blue-red, the “Coke” is red-black. Less obvious names include the “Batman” for the Rolex GMT-Master 2 116710BLNR and for the Ref. 126710BLNR (2019). Similar origins have the nicknames “Kermit and” Hulk “from the comic book world. These only refer to the Rolex Submariner models. The “Kermit” is an anniversary model of the Submariner 16610 with black dial and striking green rim, which is marked in the reference with the exit LV for “lunette” or “green bezel”. Its successor with green bezel and green dial becomes the “Hulk” Ref. Called 116610LV.
The Rolex Daytona “Panda” (Ref 116523) comes with a white dial and black sub-dial. The dial of the Daytona “Ice Blue” is also decisive for the nickname: the ice blue dial of the platinum watch is surrounded by a maroon bezel. The same goes for the Oyster Perpetual “Azzuro Blue” (ref 177200), whose bright blue dial attracts attention. Other watches got their nicknames from celebrities who wore them regularly. The “Paul Newman” Daytona is the best example of this. The blue-eyed actor helped bring the Daytona series to prominence, as “Paul Newman” Daytonas are only models with the reference 6239 Exotic Dial.
Find out more about the Rolex Air-King
Buy Rolex Air-King watches new, vintage and used
The Rolex Air-King is one of the oldest series from Rolex. It is considered an entry-level model and has a simple design and affordable price. Originally it was developed as part of the Air series for British pilots during the Second World War, which they particularly appreciated for the large (35mm), which was a large case for the time.
For a long time, the Air-King remained unchanged. To this day, it has remained true to the original 1950s design, but has undergone several technical innovations and updates. With the introduction of the current model 116900 at Baselworld 2016, the case diameter has increased (40mm). Visually, their recognizable value is unmistakable, even the “Air-King” font on the dial of the current collection takes over the original font from the 1950s.
Main features of the Air-King series
The Air-King series convinces with simplicity and high functionality. Pilots have always appreciated their quiet design and readability. Although simplicity is appreciated, the new model has a striking dial. The ref. 116900 of the current collection has a Rolex logo in bright green. It has a ribbed bezel, and on the dial, the 3, 6 and 9 are prominent in Arabic numerals, the other numerals provide as a 5-step orientation for minutes. It comes with an Oyster bracelet and Oyster clasp, which guarantees a perfect fit for any wrist. The standard caliber 3131 guarantees perfect accuracy, the watch is certified as a chronometer of superlatives.
The story of the Air-King
The history of the Air-King begins in the 1930s, when British pilots regularly wore Oyster Perpetual watches because of their slightly larger case. Rolex responded to this observation and developed several watches especially for the pilots, these models were more legible due to the larger dial. There were different designs, The Air-Tiger, the Air-Giant, the Air-Lion, and the Air-King. Only the Air-King was really marketed. The first Air-King was introduced in 1945 with the ref. 4925. Their classic simplicity was also well received outside of aviation circles, and the Air-King quickly became one of Rolex Watches Online most iconic models. Nevertheless, they never lost contact with aviation, for example the airline “Pan Am” gives the pilots who retire an Air-King to thank them for their work.
For a long time, almost nothing has changed in the design of the series. In the 1960s, two-tone models made of stainless steel and yellow-gold with a smooth and ribbed bezel were added to the collection. Two more stainless steel models with two new bezels were released in 1992.
Production temporarily stopped between 2014 and 2016 and the watch was re-introduced at Basel world in 2016 as a new design with the ref. 116900.
